About Hetalia OCs...

Journal Entry: Fri Jun 22, 2012, 4:10 PM

Listen, maggots. (and I mean that in the most loving way posible).
About Hetalia OCs...
You should do your research on them, or there's no doubt that you're going to get targeted by the people who hate shitty OCs. Don't make them a Mary-Sue or Gary-Stu. You also might offend someone who's from that particular country.

BUT.

There's a flip side to the situation.

People who go around "critiquing" OCs...
You better be sure as hell that your 'critique' is actually helpful. Because critiques can hurt. And they do. (Well, some of them).
Honestly.
Completely slandering someone's inaccurate OC? That doesn't help. At all. Calling it a "piece of shit"?
You can be pretty damn sure that the OC creator is going to bitch at you for that. I would too. Actually, I would probably just mock them, but still.
Instead, you should politely point out that their OC has some flaws. Also, pointing them to sources with information on the country is always nice too.

Remember,

Critique =/= Trolling

AND

Critique =/= Being a complete dickhead who isn't actually doing anything to help

kthnxbai

Actually nobody has ever attacked my Hetalia OC :iconask-argentina:, but this is coming from something that recently happened.

Loved your journal entry! /total fave.

Is this because of the journal that was recently posted on the APH-OC group page by one of its administrators? (She/He titled it "Stop, Just Stop it" or something and it was about people and "whitewashing" country OCs)

why thank you~
and no, it's because of something that happened with a friend of mine and her OC. Personally, I don't like whitewashed OCs either (which is why mine is tanned)

Oooh alright.

Truth be told, everyone has been somehow exposed to flaming in one way or another :/ I mean, there's always going to be dicks around that won't even help you and instead only encourage you to want to crawl under a rock or something. It's stupid, and it's far worse when you learn that this people are usually just wanting to feel better by making you feel like shit. :(

I agree. Know what you say before you say it. Even if it means going 5 minutes out of your way (GOD FORBID) to look something up. Or double check. Or whatever.

I totally agree. Spending 10 minutes on researching an OC? No way. That takes too much time away from my 'kawaii desu' buttsex. //shot dead

Thank you :worship: I have a Hetalia FC (Ireland), and originally she was really crappy in every sense of the word. (Heck, she looked like Belgium when I first thought of making her :XD: And I had never seen Belgium before >3>) I eventually got down the design and personality, but... I still hadn't even googled basic history of Ireland =__="
But then when I saw all those well made Hetalia OCs/FCs/whateveryouprefers, I finally hit the books and started researching Irish History. I must say, I was a bit surprised when I saw that Russia and Ireland actually get along... So... yeah. Interesting stuff. Now her personality reflects history =v=

It's all about doing your research, really.
No research=Most likely Mary-Sue. And probably offensive to someone from the country/district/city/whateveryourcharacteris
Research=Likeable character. Still offensive, but in the Hetalia style and not just outright crappy.

Thanks for stating this :D
I am still quite intimidated about some of those people who critique very harshly though. That is one of the very reasons why I am kind like shy/scared to post up profiles I made for some of my state-tans because I always think that someone is going to bash on me and say that I did this wrong in very harsh tone or that I offended them ;3; and that will probably make me feel ashamed of myself

Thank you. Someone actually completely bitched out my characters because I took a few of, what I call "historical liberties" from things, but it makes sense in my mind, and I know people who are perfectly okay with it.
Now, I would have been fine if someone had pointed out these and were respectful of myself and my opinion, but this person tore into me and basically made me feel like I was lower than dirt. Almost crawled to Tumblr for good because of that, but after that I decided that I'm happy with my character.
For the most part, I think that's all that matters.

Generally I try not to piss people off on the internet (...try) but there is a difference between offering a hard but accurate review and trolling. And flaming. Flaming is different from trolling, I feel like that's important.

A troll would just post things to piss the artist off. A flame is generally more influenced by anger or annoyance and is slightly less pointless. "This is just shit, you're insulting yourself and everyone who lives in this country." would be a flame, not trolling. Going to every single one of the artist's pieces and posting 'You suck" on them would be trolling.

However, a harsh review/critique, while still painful, is different and, in my opinion, completely acceptable. Something like "It's stupid to make her hair blue if she's supposed to represent actual freaking people. I mean, seriously? No." is a harsh way of putting it, but...accurate. I wouldn't call that a flame. I get tired of people who can't tell the difference between a flame and a truthful voice. If you don't want to open yourself up to the possibility that people won't like your work or might find something wrong with it, don't show anyone. It's the harsh truth.

I think people should be nicer about it, but in all honesty those comments/reviews have always been the most helpful for me. Telling someone all the things you like about their stuff isn't ever really going to help them improve. And artists should be more mature about this type of thing. If you get a nasty review, don't whine about it, examine it and decide if you think it has any basis or not. Can you use it to improve?

Or we could all just bicker at each other and call it a day.

You're right, I guess. I do agree with you that constructive criticism can be painful and are actually very helpful. However, saying something like "this is shit" has NO constructive value at all.
Also, when people are completely rude and awful about it, the OC creator tends to get irritated and offended, thus making it more difficult to help them improve.
Therefore, I believe that being polite about things works much better.

Right, flames generally have no constructive purpose. They're just a way to rant.

But I think more fault lies with the artist than the reviewer. Yes, you should be nice about it, but it says a lot about someone if they revert to immaturity when presented with a harsh review of their work. You can't walk around expecting everyone is going to be nice and love everything you do; take it in stride.

It's my job as a reviewer to point out the flaws in a work and it's the job of the artist to listen to me and choose how to use my view. When I took a class in Creative Writing we were quite harsh with each other, but we always appreciated the input. Sometimes the harder it is to hear the more we need to hear it.

I don't see why Virginia (my OC) is getting attacked so quickly. People don't get it when I say that she has multiple ethnic bloods within (Black/African-American, Hispanic, English/British etc) because those are the ethnic groups that make up the Virginian population. Must I type it in the language of "idiot" for people? And how was I supposed to know that the largest Navy base in the entire United States was located in Virginia?! I based her outfit off of a Marine uniform because I admire the Marines very much (not to mention I plan to become one) and the colors match up to the Virginia state flag. But, I'm still just a kid; I don't know everything to my state, and I'm still learning. I was never taught this is class since the majority of the time, we were always studying other states and countries. I mean, I can understand constructive criticism, but this is just bat-shit crazy... But I was right though; a shitstorm would come through.

I think they're not saying about the ethnic groups living there, I think they're saying foreign influence should take an affect on her too.
